Sumner Lofts  Portland, Oregon

The Sumner Lofts is an existing concrete tilt-up warehouse in North Portland renovated into 5 open and flexible live-work spaces, each connected to a private rear yard space. The project is the first in a series that includes Williams Five, a proposed 5-unit live-work building on an adjacent site.

The front entry vestibules utilize a stainless steel mesh screen to reflect light towards the outside, minimizing views in through the large front window to increase privacy along Williams Avenue. A Skylight in each space washes light along a double height wall, reducing glare and contrast in the frequently overcast Portland weather. The kitchen, dining and live-work space make up the first floor of each unit while the second floor mezzanine provides a sleeping and bathing space. A floor to ceiling sliding glass door connects the ground floor to the private yard at each unit.
