Portland, Oregon | Winner of the 2009 AIA Mayor’s Award For Design Excellence
Completed in 2008, Williams Five is a five unit live-work building in North Portland located on a site adjacent to The Sumner Lofts. The two front units offer an alternative for people who want spaces designed for both living and working while the three rear units provide a unique loft style space with the added component of three bedrooms and a private garden space.
Williams Five utilizes the north wall of The Sumner Lofts to create a unique urban entry sequence on a private alley space. The three rear units have a large glass door on the alley that can be opened to allow the living spaces to spill outside and an area of open steel grate floor on the second floor to allow light and air deeper into the space.
The two live-work units facing Williams Avenue have 450 square feet each of ground floor commercial space, two floors of residential space above and a large exterior deck off the third floor master bedroom.
The exterior is clad in cedar channel siding and contrasting white stucco.
